Zeeland is full of surprises … and seals are perhaps the cutest of them! These curious and cute looking animals are totally at home in our Zeeland waters. You can spot them in several places in Zeeland. A large group of seals live in the Oosterschelde and they are also regularly spotted in the Westerschelde. Around Deltapark Neeltje Jans you have a good chance of encountering them, especially at low tide when they rest on the sandbanks on the North Sea side and near the barrier.

Zeeland is known for its seafood, with Yerseke being the oyster capital. And that is precisely what makes this experience so unique: instead of being served them, you go out and get them yourself! Oyster season runs from September through April. Oysters are gathered around low tide, about two hours before and two hours after. Along the Oosterschelde you will find several small beaches, where you can find oysters on the edges near the foot of the dike. This special activity does come with some rules. Read well in advance, so you collect responsibly and do not disturb nature.

Step aboard the steam train and travel back in time. During the ride from Goes to Borsele you will experience how train travel used to be. On some days you will even encounter extras in period clothing, which will take you back in time.

Although the train ride is already a moving museum, you can visit the museum in Goes. In the Traction Building, for example, you can see how volunteers restore and maintain the trains, and you can view various exhibits. The schedule of the steam train varies each month. Who doesn’t love: a delicious Zeeland bolus? This sweet treat really shouldn’t be missing during your visit to Zeeland. But how much fun is it to make them yourself?

There are several places in Zeeland where you can take workshops to make your own Zeeland boluses. From cooking workshops in the countryside to baking classes in the city, there is plenty to choose from. For example, you can go to De Krommenhoeke cooking farm in Biggekerke and Aart’s Bread in Middelburg. At the Zeeuwse Bakclub in Kruiningen you learn to make boluses with ingredients you can just find in the supermarket. That way you can bake them at home too. In addition, there are plenty of other fun places where you can master this Zeeland classic. Enjoy your meal!
