Seal Safari
Zeeland is full of surprises… and seals are perhaps the best of them all! These curious and adorable-looking animals are right at home in the waters of Zeeland. You can spot them in various places throughout the province. A large group of seals lives in the Oosterschelde, and they are also regularly seen in the Westerschelde. Around Deltapark Neeltje Jans , you have a good chance of encountering them, especially at low tide when they rest on the sandbars on the North Sea side and near the flood barrier.
Want to learn more about seals and other animals in the Oosterschelde? Then join a seal safari with Frisia Rondvaarten or opt for the nature cruise with MS Onrust.
Oyster harvesting
Zeeland is known for its seafood and shellfish, with Yerseke as its oyster capital. And that’s exactly what makes this experience so unique: instead of having them served to you, you go out and harvest them yourself! Oyster season runs from September through April. The best time to gather oysters is around low tide, about two hours before and two hours after. Along the Oosterschelde, you’ll find several small beaches where you can find oysters at the edges near the base of the dike. There are a few rules. Make sure to read up on them beforehand so you can harvest responsibly and avoid disturbing nature.
Steam train from Goes to Borsele
Hop aboard the steam train and travel back in time. On the ride from Goes to Borsele, you’ll get a taste of what train travel was like in the old days. On certain days, you’ll even encounter actors in period costumes, making you feel as though you’ve truly stepped back in time.
Although the train ride itself is like a moving museum, you can also visit the museum in Goes. There, in the Traction Building, you can see how volunteers restore and maintain the trains, and you can view various exhibitions. The steam train’s schedule varies by month, so be sure to check the website of the Goes-Borsele Steam Train for the current times.
Make your own Zeeland bolus
Who doesn’t love a delicious Zeeland bolus? This sweet treat is a must-try during your visit to Zeeland. But how fun is it to make them yourself?
There are several places in Zeeland where you can take workshops to make your own Zeeuwse bolussen. From cooking workshops in the countryside to baking classes in the city, there’s plenty to choose from. For example, you can visit De Krommenhoeke Cooking Farm in Biggekerke and Aart’s Brood in Middelburg. At the Zeeland Baking Club in Kruiningen, you’ll learn how to make bolussen using ingredients you can easily find at the supermarket. That way, you can bake them yourself at home, too. There are also plenty of other great places where you can master this Zeeland classic. Enjoy your meal!
