The 4 most beautiful natural and cultural sites in the municipality of Hulst

Hulst
Chelsey van Overmeiren

Hello! My name is Chelsey van Overmeiren and I live in the municipality of Hulst, in the village of Nieuw-Namen. Aside from taking photos being my greatest passion, I also enjoy hiking or biking. Zeeuws-Vlaanderen is beautiful, but I think that not enough attention is paid to the part where I live. Therefore I would like to introduce you to some beautiful nature and culture spots in the municipality of Hulst; the Wallen in Hulst, Saeftinghe in Nieuw-Namen, de Groeve in Nieuw-Namen and Groot Eiland in Hulst.

Discover the Red Light District of Hulst

First of all I made a walk on the ramparts in Hulst. Hulst is a fortified town with nine bastions. During this walk you will encounter all these strongholds: Het Molenbolwerk, Brederodebolwerk, Nassaubbolwerk, Oranjebolwerk, Princebolwerk, Solmsbolwerk, Oude Molenbolwerk, Doelenbolwerk and Galgebolwerk. Pagadders are hidden on the ramparts and in the inner city. These are Spanish soldiers and you can search for them together with your family! You walk along a large stretch of water called the Vest. You can enjoy the beautiful view and afterwards have a fresh beer or a bite to eat at one of the nice cafes or restaurants in the Grand Place. You’ll take about an hour to walk the Red Light District. Absolutely worth it!

Plodding through the Drowned Land

Then I went plodding through the channels of the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe. Not really plodding along, because it can be quite dangerous when the water comes up. You can do an unaccompanied walking tour through the Land van Saeftinghe: the Plankierenroute. But aren’t you afraid to get dirty and do you want an extensive guided walk? You can! Take a look here and plan an adventurous day out. Saeftinghe used to be inhabited, but due to various storm tides it has been flooded. It is the largest salt marsh area in Europe! This beautiful piece of nature always reminds me of the old days, because we often went here with the elementary school. Pure nostalgia!

Fossils of millions of years old

Then I went to take a look at the Groeve. Actually it is called ́Meester van der Heijden Groeve.` It is an earth monument in which you can find fossils as much as 3 million years old. Rusted iron particles created the characteristic red sand layers. You can visit the Groeve daily until 17:00. You can also get a guided tour here, for this you must contact the Forestry Commission. The Groeve has been renewed with a raised wooden path, so you can see all sides well. Nieuw-Namen is a small village, but it still has something cultural and I am proud of that!

Relax on Big Island

Finally I drove with my boyfriend in the mini to Groot Eiland. We’ve been here a few times to hike and picnic. On Groot Eiland you will find a footpath and a bird-watching hut. From there you have a breathtaking view over the creeks, meadows and forests! I always find peace and quiet when I walk here. You get the feeling like you’re on vacation. There are of course more beautiful places to walk in the municipality of Hulst, but these are the most beautiful places I know and will never get bored. Have fun hiking!
