Midweek away in Zeeland?

Those who think of Zeeland think of endless beaches, vast polders and fields, authentic villages, as well as Zeeland’s delicacies such as mussels and bolussen. Over the years, Zeeland always seems to be moving, but at a pace that is pleasant to follow and thus not like the big cities. Beyond the hip coffee shops, beach pavilions and festivals, Zeeland remains a place of character, history and folk tales. So don’t feel like and have time to travel far, but would like to get away to a place where you can enjoy yourself? Come to the bottom part of the Netherlands because here you will find all kinds of hidden gems for a midweek getaway in Zeeland!

The best regions and locations for a weekend getaway

Every island in Zeeland has special places that are not known to everyone. Pearls that are only discovered after being pointed out to you. That’s why we would like to give you our insider tips to make your midweek in Zeeland unforgettable!

Starting with Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, the only region in Zeeland that is not a (peninsular) island, but can only be reached from the rest of the Netherlands via the Westerschelde Tunnel, on land via Belgium or by ferry from Vlissingen (on foot or by bicycle). When you take the Westerschelde Ferry, you come out in the fishing village of Breskens. The crossing in itself is quite an experience, but there is also plenty to do in Breskens during a midweek Zeeland. Explore the marina, take a look at the Spuiplein with dozens of restaurants or boutiques or head out to the beach. On one of those beautiful spots on the beach you will find the beach pavilion Loods Tien. A hip, casual joint with great food and views of the Vlissingen skyline.

If you go a little further inland – about 6 kilometers away – you will come across the historic village of Groede, which is not to be missed. Groede is not large, but with its old houses, narrow alleys and a beautiful market square with restaurants, it is well worth a visit. Tip: take a walk down the Slijkstraatje with nostalgic stores, museums and a bakery where you can taste the delicious Groese porridge cake.

Finally, we also want to share with you the charming Sluis from Zeeland Flanders. A place with burgundian influences by Belgium and therefore super fun to visit when you spend a midweek in Zeeland. Sluis is fun for shopping, walking the ramparts and enjoying a waffle or a good Belgian beer. This place is not very well known among the Dutch, but rather by our southern neighbors. You will most likely have to listen a little better to understand everyone here correctly. That’s really experiencing the vacation feeling!

Of course, the cozy seaside resort of Domburg (on Walcheren) should not be missing from this list! The lively center with trendy restaurants, boutiques and a beach within walking distance is perfect for a midweek in Zeeland. Combine a day at the beach with shopping and end the evening with a nice dinner. In short, everything can be found in this small but bustling village!

We conclude the list with the atmospheric town of Veere, located on Lake Veere. In Veere, you imagine yourself back in time. Discover the Great Church from the 14th century, look for the Scottish cottages dating back to the 16th century and wander through the town with all kinds of studios, cozy restaurants and more than enough unique stores such as gift store ‘Saartje’. Also be sure to visit Veere’s marina with historic buildings, stores, terraces and a view of the incoming boats! With some sunshine, you will experience the real vacation feeling!

What to do during a midweek in Zeeland

When you spend a midweek in Zeeland, there are plenty of fun things to do. Fun addresses we have already mentioned, but you can also enjoy the beach and nature to the fullest! Zeeland has a coastline of no less than 650 kilometers and several natural areas where you can enjoy hiking. We can definitely recommend a visit to the versatile and special nature reserve Oranjezon between Oostkapelle and Vrouwenpolder if you are spending a midweek in Zeeland. The nature reserve covers 400 hectares and consists of coniferous forest, deciduous forest and dunes. Besides deer and fallow deer, konik horses and hereford cows also live there. You would almost forget you are in Zeeland. Moreover, more and more events are also unfolding in Zeeland. Think of large events such as Concert at Sea, Film by Sea or Liberation Festival, as well as small, local festivities such as fishing festivals. In short, a midweek Zeeland is a true celebration!
