Going on vacation in Ossenisse? Our top tips for things to do in the area

Nestled among the vast polders and close to the Westerschelde lies the peaceful village of Ossenisse. A small village where you can enjoy the outdoors and use as a great base for exploring the rest of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. There’s plenty to do in Ossenisse and the surrounding area: from spotting seals and walking along the dike to exploring the fortified town of Hulst, enjoying delicious food at local spots, and taking a day trip across the Belgian border. We’ve compiled a list of our favorite spots along with tips from locals who know the area like no one else.

De zeedijk bij Ossenisse

Getting some fresh air along the Westerschelde

Put on your walking shoes or hop on your bike and head toward the seawall. From here, you can look out over the Westerschelde and, with a little luck, spot seals and various bird species. The large ocean-going ships sailing toward Antwerp also ensure that there’s always something to see on the water. After your walk or bike ride, stop by Bar Goed at Perkpolder Beach for a refreshing drink and some snacks.

Basiliek van Hulst

Discover the fortified town of Hulst

A visit to Hulst is a must during your stay in Ossenisse. This lively fortified town is perfect for a fun day out. Stroll through the historic streets, browse the shops and outdoor cafes, or take a walk along the old city walls. In the city center, you’ll find the imposing St. Willibrord Basilica. You can explore the interior of the basilica, or climb the tower for a beautiful view of Hulst and the surrounding area.

Taking the kids out? Then turn your visit into a little scavenger hunt with the Pagadder Route. Scattered throughout Hulst, you’ll come across the little Pagadders, and children will learn more about the city in a fun, playful way. And after all that walking, it’s time for a delicious meal, of course. Pull up a chair at FERM for a cozy bistro evening in downtown Hulst.

In the mood for a movie night? Right in the heart of Hulst, you’ll find De Koning van Engeland, a charming boutique movie theater where you can enjoy the latest films in a cozy setting. It’s a great way to end your day in Hulst, but it’s also perfect when the Zeeland weather isn’t cooperating.

Taste of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen

Of course, no vacation is complete without good food. And fortunately, you don’t have to look far to find it in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. For example, visit NOOS in Terneuzen for a cozy drink or dinner. It’s also a great spot for families: there’s a spacious play loft where both younger and older children can have fun.

Want to experience the authentic Zeeland way? Then drive to Philippine, known as the “mussel village.” Take a seat at Auberge des Moules and enjoy a delicious mussel meal.

Another fun idea: bring a treat to your vacation home. Pick up fresh rolls or a Zeeuwse bolus at Bakkerij Goossen in Kloosterzande, discover local products at Landwinkel Oude Stoof, or stop by Het Melkhuis farm for homemade ice cream and other dairy products.

Uitkijktoren niemandsland

Push the limits

From Ossenisse, you can drive straight toward the Belgian border. Right on the border between the Netherlands and Belgium, you’ll find the Niemandsland Lookout, a 22-meter-high observation tower. Climb the tower and enjoy the sweeping view of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and the Belgian Waasland.

Then continue on toward the village of Koewacht and turn it into a culinary outing right away. Stop by Bij van Dijk for a delicious lunch or a sumptuous dinner. That way, you can combine a special part of the area with a great spot to end the day.

Discover Axel

Axel is also a great place to visit during your stay in Ossenisse. Are you a fan of flea markets and unique finds? Then be sure to check out De Stoof, where you can enjoy browsing through all kinds of vintage and one-of-a-kind items. Want to learn more about the history of Axel and the region? Then pay a visit to Museum Het Warenhuis. Prefer to get out and about? Golf enthusiasts can hit a few balls on the 18-hole golf course at De Woeste Kop. Afterward, stop by Mia’s Restaurant & Bar, where you can enjoy a cozy lunch, drinks, or dinner.

Out and About with Kids

There’s plenty for kids to do around Ossenisse, too. On a warm summer day, the De Honte outdoor pool in Kloosterzande is a great place for an afternoon of water fun. Is the weather a bit less than ideal, or are you in the mood for something different? Then head to Hulst for a game of bowling or mini-golf at De Bourgondiër.

The Drowned Land of Saeftinghe

For one of the most unique nature reserves in the area, head toward the Belgian border. The Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe is a vast area outside the dikes where the tides still have a major impact on the landscape. There you’ll find mudflats, salt marshes, creeks, and an enormous variety of birds. The landscape feels rugged and expansive and is completely different from the beaches and dunes of Zeeland that you may be used to. You can explore part of the area on your own via short hiking trails. If you’d like to venture further into the nature reserve, join a tour led by an experienced guide.

From the polders of Zeeland to the ski slopes

You don’t have to go all the way to the Alps for a winter sports vacation. At SnowWorld Terneuzen, you can simply hit the slopes on skis or a snowboard right here in the Netherlands. Whiz down the slopes, practice your turns, and then warm up with a hot chocolate. That way, you can still get a little taste of that winter sports vibe right in the heart of Zeeland.

Visit Belgian Cities

One of the great things about a vacation in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen is its location near Belgium. Are you in the mood for a day of shopping, outdoor cafes, culture, and good food? Then you can drive from Ossenisse to Antwerp or Ghent. And afterward? Just head back to the tranquility of Ossenisse. This way, you can combine the tranquility of the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen countryside with a day trip to a city across the border—all in one vacation.
