Morning: Waking Up at the Zwin
Start at the beach in Cadzand-Bad, a ten-kilometer-wide stretch of sand with the Knokke skyline on the horizon and dunes where your dog can easily keep itself entertained for an hour. Outside of peak season, this stretch of coastline is remarkably quiet—plenty of space, few people, and sand that sticks between your toes. From the beach, you can walk right into the Zwin, the nature reserve that forms the border with Belgium. Here you can take a lovely walk along creeks and salt marshes; your dog will barely be able to keep up with all the scents.
(Please note: From May 1 through September 30, dogs must be kept on a leash on the beach between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.; outside of those hours and during the off-season, they may run free.)
Lunchtime: a terrace overlooking the Zwin
After that walk, De Zeemeeuw Beach Pavilion, right on the Zwin, is the perfect place to stop. Your dog is welcome there on a leash and will be given a bowl of water without any questions asked. Order something from the menu—such as fish or seasonal dishes—and take in the view of the very same landscape you just walked through.
Afternoon: Sluis, or another walk through the polder
If you’re in the mood for something other than the beach, it’s just a 15-minute drive to Sluis. I’ve been there a few times myself. Sluis is a fortified town with canals, a windmill, and plenty of outdoor cafes where you can share an ice cream with your dog. Cozy and romantic are the first things that come to mind when I think of this village. Or would you rather enjoy the tranquility of the countryside? Then a walk through the polders around Groede is a lovely alternative, set amid farmland and wide-open skies. The village itself still owes its dry feet to the dikes built by Jacob Cats.
Where to Stay: the coast or the polder?
There’s also a huge selection of places to stay, and you can choose between the polder and the coast. If you want the sea practically on your doorstep, consider Ca d’Oro Cadzand at De Brabander 111, which features a fully fenced-in garden within walking distance of the beach and space for up to two dogs. If the tranquility of the polder appeals to you more, then Tiny House Wood & Fire in Groede is a hidden gem where you can unwind, with a terrace overlooking the polder landscape and a cozy fire in the stove in the evening.
