1. Paint pumpkins or turn them into candles

Pumpkins are a fall staple! Turn it into a fun outing and go pumpkin hunting: it’s a blast with the kids, but also a great activity to enjoy with your significant other. In September and October, you can find pumpkins in various places throughout Zeeland, and—depending on the location and the season—fun activities are organized. Think of days when you go pumpkin picking, visit a pumpkin patch or take a walk through a pumpkin garden.

Discover the best pumpkin activities at De Pompoenwinkel in Geersdijk or Charlotte’s Pompoenen in IJzendijke. Here, you can not only check out the pumpkins, but also take one (or two, three, or even more) home to get creative with in your vacation home or at home.

Using paint, markers, or googly eyes, the children can transform a pumpkin into a cheerful little figure, an animal, or a colorful work of art. You only need a few materials, and even the youngest children can join in with a little help. Acrylic paint works best for painting pumpkins. It covers the skin well and dries quickly.

What do you need?

  • A small pumpkin
  • Paint or markers
  • Paintbrushes
  • Craft glue

You can also use a pumpkin as a mold to make your own candle. Cut off the top of the pumpkin and hollow it out. Melt the beeswax pellets, add a little scented oil, insert a wick, and fill the pumpkin.

Supplies:

  • A small pumpkin
  • Spoon or small knife for scooping out the flesh
  • Beeswax pellets, wick
  • Optional: autumn-scented essential oilPrefer something simpler? Place a tea light or LED tea light inside the hollowed-out pumpkin. This way, you can create a warm, autumnal atmosphere on your table or windowsill in no time.

Turn it into a cozy fall getaway right away: starting from the small-scale nature park Watervliet in Kortgene , you can easily explore the Noord-Beveland area. Or combine your pumpkin hunt with a stay in the green surroundings of Cadzand, for example at Cadshuis The Cottage or Cadshuis The Barn. That way, you’ll have plenty of time to explore and then get to work together with the pumpkins you’ve picked out.

2. Collecting seashells and making a picture frame

A walk on the beach is also wonderful in the fall. The fresh sea air, the sound of the waves, and the search for unique beach treasures make it a fun outing for the whole family.

Gather a few beautiful seashells with the kids and take them back to your vacation home. Turn them into a fun and personalized photo frame with a nice vacation photo. That way, you’ll have a super-cute frame at home and a tangible memento of your fall vacation in Zeeland.

  • Seashells from the beach
  • A simple wooden picture frame
  • Craft glue or restoration paste (available at the hardware store)
  • A nice vacation photo from Zeeland
  1. Choose a simple wooden picture frame with a slightly wider border.
  2. Lay out the shells you’ve collected on the table and start arranging them into a nice composition.
  3. Apply craft glue or restoration paste to the edge of the frame.
  4. Gently press the shells into the glue and let everything dry thoroughly.
    5. Pick out a nice vacation photo and place it in the picture frame.
Also fun: a real fall-themed version with dry leaves and small twigs that you glue onto the picture frame

3. Collect leaves and make an autumn leaf garland

Yellow, orange, red, and brown: in the fall, Zeeland’s natural landscape transforms into a stunning palette of colors. Head out for a walk through the woods and collect leaves in all sorts of shapes and colors. Once you’re back at your vacation home or at home, turn these finds into a cheerful fall leaf garland.

  1. Find leaves in different colors and shapes.
  2. Let them dry between a few sheets of paper, perhaps with a heavy book on top.
  3. Carefully attach the leaves to a string using small clothespins, or glue them onto a sturdy ribbon.
  4. Hang the garland in front of the window or above the dining table.Tip: Combine the leaves with small drawings of chestnuts and acorns, or hang the leaves upside down and turn them into cute little foxes using white and black paint or markers. Turn it into a game: have each child find five different leaves. Who can find the biggest, the smallest, or the leaf with the most colors? That way, the walk instantly becomes a fun activity for the whole family.

Where can you find the most beautiful fall colors in Zeeland?

Head out to Oranjezon Nature Reserve near Oostkapelle, De Manteling van Walcheren near Domburg, or Boswachterij Westerschouwen on the Kop van Schouwen. Here you can enjoy a lovely walk among the trees and dunes and search together for the most beautiful leaves.

4. Making little pumpkins out of wool

Here’s another fun fall project to do with kids: making cute little pumpkins out of yarn. These little fall decorations aren’t just fun to make—they also look great on the dining table, on the windowsill, or as decorations in your (vacation) home.

Go ahead and make a few in different colors and sizes. Let each child design their own pumpkin and find a nice spot for your fuzzy fall family.

  • An empty toilet paper roll
  • A twig from the woods
  • A ball of yarn
  • A pair of scissors

Pick up a ball of yarn in one of Zeeland’s charming little towns, such as Zierikzee, Veere, or Middelburg. Pick up a few small, dry twigs during an autumn walk. That way, you can combine some fresh air with a cozy crafting session indoors!

  1. Cut an empty toilet paper roll into two small rings, and make small notches at the top and bottom of the roll, about 1 centimeter apart.
  2. Wrap the yarn around the toilet paper roll over and over again. Keep going until the cardboard is completely covered with a thick layer of yarn.
  3. Fold the notches on the toilet paper roll inward and carefully tuck the ends of the yarn between the other strands to create a nice, full little pumpkin.
  4. As a finishing touch, insert a small twig in the center;giving the little pumpkin a real stem.

5. Making a Spider Web Loom

During a fall walk, you’ll come across all kinds of beautiful natural materials. With three sturdy branches and a ball of yarn, you can turn them into a unique spiderweb. It’s a fun activity for kids who love exploring outdoors and getting creative indoors.

  1. Gather three sturdy branches that aren’t too thick.
  2. Arrange the branches on top of each other in the shape of a star and tie them securely together in the center.
  3. Tie a piece of wool to one of the branches.
  4. Wrap the yarn from one branch to the next, working your way outward.
  5. Tie it securely with a double knot.
  6. Decorate the loom with autumn leaves, acorns, pinecones, or other natural treasures you’ve found.

And there you have it: your very own spiderweb made from natural materials! Hang the loom in a nice spot or lean it against the wall as an autumn decoration.

6. Decorating candles with paint

It’s raining outside, the candles are lit, and you’re getting creative together: that’s the recipe for a wonderful fall day indoors. Cheerful, hand-painted candles are all the rage and instantly add some extra ambiance to the table. And the best part is: they’re super easy to make yourself!

Choose fall colors like rust brown, ochre yellow, dark green, and orange. Decorate the candles with dots, tiny flowers, leaves, or cheerful patterns, for example. This way, you can turn ordinary dinner candles into real eye-catchers. Any candle marker or acrylic paint works well for painting candles. Other than that, you don’t need much—just some time, imagination, and a little patience to let the paint dry properly 😉

  • Smooth dinner candles that you can find, for example, at Dille & Kamille in Middelburg
  • Candle markers or acrylic paint (water-based)
  • Paper towels
  • A mug or small glass of water
  • Very fine brushes for acrylic paint
  • Paper to practice on first
  • A place (with a surface) to set the candles down while they dry

Oh, and don’t forget a warm cup of tea—it makes the painting party complete!
