The best spots on Walcheren

Walcheren is a peninsula of Zeeland and is considered the tourist center of this province. Not surprising when you know that it has the cleanest beaches in the Netherlands and lots of nice villages and towns, including the capital Middelburg. Below are our best spots on Walcheren.

Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland

We kick off with the capital of Zeeland. There is plenty to do in Middelburg, including plenty of history, a bustling shopping district and a wide range of restaurants and cafes. When the weather is nice, enjoy the sun and the crowds on one of the many terraces, but you can also have a great time when the weather is not so good. Visit the Zeeuws Museum and view the art at the Vleeshal or go shopping in the stores and nice boutiques. For a great view, climb the 90.5-meter-high tower the Lange Jan; you’ll have to climb 207 stairs for this.

The town of Veere is one of the province’s tourist attractions and is certainly one of the nicest places on Walcheren! Thus, the surroundings of Veere are perfect for a nice walk or nice bike ride. In addition, enjoy the beautiful boats in the marina on a fine terrace. Visit one of the historic boutiques, such as Grandma’s Candy Shop. This old-fashioned candy store, featuring Zeeland sweets, is definitely not to be missed when visiting Veere. Finally, the city is located on the Veerse Meer, where many water activities can be found. So you can combine a city day with fun sports activities.

Our tip: take a walk around the fortifications of Veere, which date back to the time of Napoleon, and don’t forget to walk through the Stone Bear, too.

Zoutelande is a popular destination among tourists. The village is known for its fine beach bars and bustling center and, of course, for Bløf and their song “Zoutelande. Because of its beautiful beach, Zoutelande has been named the best beach in the Netherlands several times. Opt for a wonderful beach day in Zoutelande, enjoying the wide beaches and the large ships passing close to the shore. End your day on one of the terraces and shop in the boutiques found there.
